Meeting on irc.gnome.org:#gtk-devel Meeting started August 16 2004 17:02 EST (21:02 UTC) In attendence: Jonathan Blandford (jrb), Matthias Clasen (matthias), Owen Taylor (owen), Federico Mena Quintero (federico), Billy Biggs (vektor), Tor Lillqvist (tml), John Ehresman (jpe), Thomas Fitzsimmons (fitzsim) I don 't know if federico will join us... maybe we can start by putting together the agenda, since I didn't put anything in the mail... my topics for today are: 2.5.2 and recent build system changes anything else we should discuss ? http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=133263 ? and whether or not it has a chance of making 2.6 ok, we should probably discuss where we stand on the 2.6 schedule... our plan/2.6 schedule states that by Aug 15, the major features should be in, an by Oct 15 we want to reach slush API freeze Aug 15 was yesterday, and I guess we haven't quite succeeded in getting all the major features listed on plan/2.6 in yet from that list, we're still missing the file picker and the file chooser enhancements minor api additions will still happen between now and Oct 15, so I'd say 133263 has a realistic chance if we can work out an acceptable patch by then matthias: ok. Owen's already sent some suggestions privately, so I'll post a new patch that incorporate those + API docs, probably by tomorrow fitzsim: ok here is my current thinking wrt to 2.5.2: I would like to commit the file picker soon, and maybe sort out the build system changes on win32, this week, and do a 2.5.2 afterwards since owen has asked for some review of the new api from app developers perspective, it would probably be a good idea to announce 2.5.2 as "api review release" and specifically invite people to give us feedback on the completely new stuff since I won't be available from Wed - Fri this week, 2.5.2 will probably end up being done early next week unless you all think we should get it out ASAP, and somebody else volunteers to do it later this week... * matthias hates talking to himself... * jrb reads matthias: Sorry, it all sounds good to me, so I don't have anything to add thanks, owen unfortunately, federico seems unavailable...I wanted to ask him about the status of his planned file chooser additions what did he have planned? jrb: the things listed on plan/2.6: - Shared settings with Nautilus - Automatic bookmarks / Improved bookmark system - File types in save mode jrb: do you know anything about them ? I should try another go at the UTF-8 wrappers for file system calls (#101792), according to Owen's clarifications. Might have time to do it during this week. If okayed, could then go into 2.5.2? matthias: I don't know their status, but I know what he was intending tml: anything thats ready to go in cvs can go in 2.5.2 - its just a snapshot of the current cvs... jrb: I'll try to catch federico later this week to get an update matthias: yup tml: since you are here, did you have a chance to look at the mess I recently made of the build system (gtkalias.h et al) ? tml: I wonder whats the best way to make this work on win32 the two approaches I see are: -turn it off completely by wrapping the alias headers in #ifndef G_WHATEVER_WIN32 matthias: sorry, haven't tried building HEAD after that - write separate gdkaliasx11.h gdkaliaswin32.h and have gdkalias.h include them conditionally - write out the ifdefs in gdkalias.h * matthias can't count... can't really say i would have any preference currently tml: ok, I'll look into that tomorrow and pick one of the approaches (probably the second one) <-- lystra has quit (Leaving) I have created 2.8 API freeze and 2.8 milestones for gtk+ in bugzilla now it would probably be a good idea if we could start sorting out the ~160 bugs on 2.6 API freeze and the ~230 unmilestoned bugs and move unrealistic stuff back to the deeper future tml: next week I also want to look more seriously into moving the win32 binary packages to ftp.gtk.org, I'll probably drop you another mail about that... matthias: Yeah. Should we just split up by component, or is going through bugs collectively going to be more effective owen: people (except for me) seem to be pretty good at sticking to their favourite components anyway... owen: speaking about win32 integration, do you think it makes sense to ping the wimp guys again ? matthias: If we are going to go by component, then we really need to put pressure on people to fix milestones matthias: Yeah, I think it would be good owen: we also mention the IME IM module on plan/2.6 - did we ever talk to the relevant people about integrating that ? I don't think so. How did you want to handle that tml? owen: probably would be best to get the IME and wimp people to do most of the integration work... there so much other stuff to do too tml: I think the IME integration is just basically dropping a file into the modules/input directory and fixing the makefile.am -- if there are code changes, we should certainly get them to do it, but is it worth getting them a CVS account for that? that == the integration part well if it's as easy as that, maybe not owen: wimp integration is not much more work, or is it ? Well, we need to create modules/engines and the necessary build magic, but thats all matthias: Not much more work, no, probably more ongoing chnages in the future * federico apologizes for the delay hi federico, we were wondering about the status of the file chooser enhancements you had planned for 2.6 owen: is the IME module actively maintained by somebody ? matthias: Well, it's just languishing in bugzilla, so not much opportuinty for maintainence.. matthias: I haven't written anything yet :( matthias: I want to add the interfaces that Beagle need to plug in its searching stuff I'll mail gtk-devel-list owen: ah, good I'm thinking that we'll need some gmodule stuff similar to the one used for GtkFileSystem sort of GtkFileChooserExtensionIface federico: any thoughts about - Shared settings with Nautilus - Automatic bookmarks / Improved bookmark system - File types in save mode matthias: the first one is just defining some xsettings and making both nautilus and the file chooser use them matthias: the second one is sanitizing egg-recent, basically the third one needs an API; I think there's something in the mailing list federico: will you have time to look into any of these soon, or are you concentrating on the Beagle stuff ? matthias: not very soon, I'm afraid; on Fridays I can work on the Beagle stuff this Friday I'll work on the API proposal for the Beagle stuff federico: ok, good to know if nobody has further urgent topics, I'd like to declare this weeks meeting closed now; I'll post logs tomorrow; next weeks meeting will probably be announced late again (since I'm gone) * matthias goes swimming with the kids... * tml says bye Meeting ended August 16, 17:59 EST (21:59 UTC)
